POLYCYSTIC OVARY SYNDROME


What is PCOS? —  It is a condition where women  have irregular periods,  suffer from acne ( pimples), have extra facial hair, or suffer from  hair fall. Women suffering from this condition find it difficult to conceive. This condition occurs in 5% of all women. They are mostly overweight or obese.

Causes of PCOS — In  women, ovaries form a follicle every month which releases hormones.The ovary then releases an egg through a process called ovulation.

In women having PCOS, the ovary gives rise to multiple small follicles instead of one. This leads to hormonal imbalance which suppresses ovulation.

 Symptoms of PCOS — 

  • Lesser than 8 periods a year
  • Weight gain and obesity
  • Acne (oily skin and pimples on the face)
  • Male pattern of baldness
  • Unable to become pregnant without medical help
  • Male pattern of hair growth- chin, upper lip,chest,abdomen,side lock area.

Risk factors- Women with PCOS may have other health issues like Diabetes,High cholesterol,Heart disease, sleep apnoea.At idea clinics such women can be assessed and treated for other health disorders.

  • Blood tests to measure hormone levels, blood sugar, and cholesterol

  • Pelvic ultrasound – This test is done with sound waves which gives a picture of your uterus and ovaries.

Treatment of PCOS — Birth control pills are usually given to treat some of the symptoms like irregular periods,facial hair and acne.

  • Anti-androgens,Progestin and Metformin form the basis of treatment for PCOS.
  • Medicated skin lotion or antibiotics to treat acne.
