Diabetes Management in Children and Adolescents

Diabetes Mellitus — It is an endocrine system disorder that does not allow the glucose in the body to be utilized properly. Therefore glucose accumulates in the blood. Diabetes is of 2 types- Type 1 and Type 2.  Insulin is the hormone that helps in the uptake of glucose by the cells. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas do not produce Insulin. In type 2 diabetes, the body does not produce sufficient Insulin or the body shows resistance to Insulin. In children, Type 1 diabetes is common.

At IDEACLINICS, we have a diabetes team that includes an endocrinologist, physician, psychologist, diabetes nurse, dietician and a pharmacist who will take care of your child every visit. They will teach you how to take care of your child at home/school and

Diabetes Management in Children

Medication — Children with type 1 diabetes will have to take Insulin injections daily to lower blood sugar levels. More than one dose maybe needed for a good control. Our Diabetes team will train you about the types of Insulin, how and when to use it and dose adjustment etc.

Tests – Usually you must check your child’s blood sugar level about 4 times every day using a glucose monitoring device called blood glucose meter. Your child may need to do a blood test called HbA1C at regular intervals.

Which is the average blood sugar level in the past 3-4 months. This test will help your doctor to check the control of the glucose levels and decide if the treatment has to be changed.

Diet – You need to plan when and how much food your child should eat. Our dieticians at IDEA clinics can help you with this. Then the doctor can plan the amount of Insulin to be given according to the blood glucose levels.

Diabetic Education – You need to get educated from our Diabetic Educators who will explain you in detail about diabetes and diabetes management in children, its symptoms in children according to the age and its long-term complications. You will also be taught what to do if glucose levels are too high or too low in your child and when to take your child to the hospital in case of an emergency. Your child will learn to deal with it as he/she will grow up.

Psychologists at IDEA CLINICS can help the child in case your child has any problem in tackling with the disease. Then he/she can lead a normal, healthy life.
